Good Career Move – The Importance of Saying ‘No’October 14, 2020 1:24 pm
It’s easy to feel pressured into a ‘yes’ or a ‘maybe’. But although it can seem counterproductive, knowing the right time to say ‘no’ at work can be a good career move.
Here are some times when the right answer is definitely, unequivocally and with no apologies ‘no’:
- When you can’t fulfil the promise – if you know you can’t deliver on what you’re being asked to do, you need to be honest to avoid a messy, painful situation further down the line.
- When it conflicts with your values – sometimes workplaces can ask you to do something you’re personally uncomfortable with. Say ‘no’ otherwise you’re setting a precedent you can’t easily go back on later.
- When you fundamentally disagree – challenge decisions you think are questionable or wrong. It doesn’t mean you should insist you are right, but questioning ideas helps everyone understand different points of view.
Personally, I always lean towards saying ‘yes’ and diving into the opportunities it offers. But I’ve learned over the years there’s a value in saying ‘no’ too. If you know it’s going to do you harm. Remember, you need to look after your best interests, even if that clashes with someone else’s.
